At the Museum of Bags and Purses, visitors find themselves in the midst of 5,000 pieces of history. The exhibits begin in the 16th century: Before pockets were invented, people wore small bags made of beads or precious metals from a belt or girdle. From there, bags evolved and branched out, turning into the workbags of the 1700s, drawstring bags made of tortoiseshell or ivory in the 1800s, and even a brocade bag made from mother of pearl. The museum’s pieces come from across the world, including Finland, Turkey, Italy, England, and the Americas. Materials range from art deco cut steel to exotic animal hides, like elephant, cobra, crocodile, and even eel. The collection includes a history of the suitcase, backpack, and vanity case.
